What is batching?

Batch processing or batching is the grouping of similar tasks that require similar resources in order to streamline their completion.  It’s commonly used by computers to optimize performance and throughput.

In everyday life, batching is the idea of dedicating some section of time for doing similar tasks.  According to Joshua Leatherman,

“it [increases] your productivity, creativity, and mental sharpness, while decreasing fatigue, procrastination, and stress.” [1]

How does it save time?

Humans aren’t much different than computers.  Context switching is costly in all regards.  Batching can increase throughput and computation potential by decreasing context switching and overhead.

While humans aren’t exactly filling their runtime stack with local variables and hot swapping threads, context switching is still applicable.  By focusing on related tasks, you can retain focus and increase productivity.

Where is batching applicable?

Batching should be used in every possible context.  Common examples are dedicating some time to respond to emails, meal prepping lunches for the week, or even shipping out orders if you’re a small business owner that sells physical products.  Rather than carrying a single package to the post office everyday, it’s much more efficient to ship a few packages a couple times a week, assuming there is some tolerance for latency.

Another example of batching is marketing on social media.  By dedicating a little bit of time once a month or once a week, you can maintain your company’s presence on social media by scheduling posts ahead of time.  Batching your social media posts can save a tremendous amount of time and even produce better results than your previous approach.

The only issue is most social media platforms do not offer any way to schedule posts ahead of time.  This is where tools such as Cloud Campaign come in.  With Cloud Campaign you can successfully batch social media posts and begin automating your marketing.  You can even further automate your marketing campaign by setting up triggers on trends or weather to automatically post for you.
